This report shows colour scales of traditional pigments used in lime washes and linseed oil paints. The samples have been measured with a spectrophotometer at the Scandinavian Colour Institute, Stockholm, Sweden (head office for NCS). The samples have also been assessed visually by the authors and given descriptive colour notations according to the Natural Colour System. The range of colours associated with each type of pigment is illustrated with the help of the NCS Colour Triangle and NCS Colour Circle.

The colour scales of the traditional pigments create frames of reference to which many people want to relate today. Few people in the modern building process have a clear idea of what colour scales were really available with traditional pigments. The paint industry mostly no longer uses earth pigments. This booklet attempts to re-establish knowledge of traditional colour scales within the context of today's conditions.

The pigments presented in this booklet have traditionally been used for the external painting of buildings in Sweden. Most of these pigments are, or have been, common in many other countries as well, and the research is therefore relevant also outside Sweden.
