NCS is principally a visual system, but to be able to produce and control NCS colours, the need for a conversion method to and from CIELAB values is necessary. To accomplish this conversion the NCS Measurement Program was developed. This program has been used by the Scandinavian Colour Institute, Stockholm, Sweden (head office for NCS), for more than fifteen years.

The software has two main functions. The first is to make an absolute calibration of the user's measurement equipment. This will translate all later measurements to the NCS reference instrument, the Zeiss DMC26. The second function is to provide the conversion of measurement data to NCS values.

The main window of the NCS Measurement Program contains the measurement list, presenting the sample name, the NCS notation and the
CIELAB values (D65, 10°). The NCS notation is given with one decimal, which is accurate enough for all visual situations. The NCS notation can be given for two billion different colours in total. By selecting a sample on the list, the nearest NCS notation and the distance in Delta E CMC (1:1) is presented in two boxes above the measurement list. There is also a box presenting the number of samples on the list. Measurement data can be stored in text format for later use in word processing, DTP software and databases. It is also possible to print directly from the program.

Specifications:
The NCS Measurement Program uses a calibration routine to relate all measurements to the NCS reference instrument, the Zeiss DMC26. For this calibration to be successful the instrument should have a measurement geometry of about the same kind as the reference instrument described here.
